iPhone Apps

Now that I've had a month to play with all of the new apps available for the iPhone, I must admit: Apple got it right.

iPhoneNot only are there some pretty good apps available so far, but the delivery method isn't bad either.  Your can download apps via iTunes, but you can also search, buy, and download apps directly from the iPhone.

Some of my favorite apps so far:

  • Bloomberg: FREE – Great for tracking stocks, mutual funds, etc.  You set up your holding and see how well they are doing.
  • Twittelator: FREE – There are several Twitter apps, but I found this one to be my favorite.
  • Pick&Choose: $4.99 – You can probably get a cheaper, or free, grocery list, but I like this one.  Comes in handy when the wife sends me to the store.
  • Bible: FREE – A Bible was one of the first things I went looking for when the app store opened.  This one requires internet access, so if you aren't near a wifi spot (or on 3G), this is not very useful.  I have hesitated in buying a Bible app with the full text of the Bible.  I'm waiting to see which one gets it exactly right.  On my tablet pc I have e-sword installed and it is by far the best Bible application available for any price – and best of all, it's free.  There is a pocket pc version of e-sword, so I'm hoping there will eventually be an iPhone version.
  • Clinometer: $.99 – As the name says, use your iPhone as a clinometer (slope measurement tool).  It uses the accelerometers to get very accurate readings.
  • Sextuple Word Challenge: $1.99 – A very bad name for an addictive word game.  Create as many 3 to 6 letter words from 6 random letters.
  • Scribble: FREE – Draw pictures on your iPhone.  The kids love this one.
  • Movies.app: FREE – Check show times and movie reviews.
  • Restaurant NutritionFREE – Check the nutritional value of menu items of just about any fast food restaurant.  Burger King Double Whopper with Cheese: 1010 calories and 66 grams of fat.  Glad I haven't eaten at Burger King in a couple of years.
  • UrbanspoonFREE – Not sure what or where to eat?  Let the restaurant slot machine pick for you.

Wow, that list is a lot longer that I guessed it would be when I started.  There are a few other apps on my iPhone that I don't use as much, but these are my favorites.

By the way, a cool feature of the iPhone – you can get a screen capture by pressing the home and power/sleep buttons at the same time.  The screen capture is added to your pictures as a Portable Network Graphic (.png).
